Abstinence Ed??

Speaking of sex....

My 13 yr old son came home with a permission slip to a program called "Wise to Wait". When I refused to fill out the very intrusive application, "were you a teen parent?" "household income?" "educational level?" "marital status?", my baby had a fit. Apparently he had to take the class to pass. Requiring children and parents to participate in a program that is based on idealist priniciple instead of reality; and wants to collects statistical data for some Bell Curve study for all I know. Well of course I had something to say about that.....

Dear Ms. Darrough:

I do not agree with abstinence education being a required course of study for my child for several reasons. From the literature, the objective of the class is “to prevent teen pregnancy through abstinence education”. Our family does not believe that teaching sexual abstinence exclusively to children will prevent them from getting pregnant or from sexual experimentation. We believe that telling our children that their natural sexual curiosities should be suppressed will lead them to suppressing sex related questions and other sexual issues for fear of disappointing us. Furthermore, according to the ACLU’s website on reproductive freedom, “talking only about sex within marriage and teaching about STIs as a form of moral punishment…, abstinence-only programs not only undermine efforts to educate students about protecting their health, but create a hostile learning environment for lesbian and gay students.” How can children who identify themselves as gay or lesbian abstain from sex until marriage if it is illegal for them to do so? Finally, I do not approve any of our family’s personal information being compiled for any undisclosed research or study to prove or disprove any point that will help the program get continued public funding.
We do believe in teaching our children to wait if they want to wait to have sex, say no if they want to say no to sex, and to be responsible enough to use protection if they say yes. I understand that you may mean well but no class “can help build my child’s self-esteem, character and provide support for him to realize his potential as a productive, responsible, caring citizen” better than his parents can. My son will not be participating in the Wise to Wait program that being offered as an assignment credit for his Science Class. Please provide my child with an alternative option to fulfill this requirement. If you have any questions please feel free to call me at (414) @@@-@@@@. Thank you.
